Miracles Still Happen
Unbelief
The man said to Jesus, “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ‘Lord I believe; help my unbelief!'” – Mark 9:24
We want so desperately to believe that miracles can still happen, but we are afraid to believe. Just like the man in the above story, who’s son that needed to be freed from oppression and torment, we don’t want to be disappointed. We have believed, or at least have attempted to believe, for so long and nothing ever seems to get better. In fact, whatever we believe for, it seems the opposite happens or like our prayers are falling on def ears.
Don’t Stop Believing
In the verse before this one, Jesus challenged the man: “Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.'” (Mark 9:23)
So how do I take this verse? I have believed, many times over, and yet nothing happened. The same happened to this father. He tried for a long time to get help for his son but to no avail. This time was different. Jesus said, “believe.” The man struggled to believe but he still put his trust in Jesus by asking for His help. Keep believing. What other choice do we have? Just because it may not have worked the last time, why do we reason that it will never happen? I think because we are afraid that we will be disappointed. So what? Disappointments happen. That is a part of life. Why does that mean that we should stop believing? It doesn’t. Don’t stop believing!
Recently, within the past few months, my Aunt Linda was diagnosed with Myeloma. This is a very deadly form of blood cancer. The prognosis was not looking good. She began treatment right away. There were going to be various stages of the treatment that would be introduced depending on how responsive her body would be to each treatment. Immediately, all our family began praying regularly that God work a miracle on her and her family’s behalf.
Just last week we got word that the doctors are stopping all treatment. She has been cured! They had barely begun to start this path of treatment and she is now cancer free! This doesn’t just happen. It’s only been a few months and even the doctors are amazed at what has taken place!
So what exactly did happen? A miracle has taken place! Miracles still happen.
what do we need to believe for?
I know that disappointments have happened in our past. We cannot let past circumstances keep us from believing that God can do a miracle in our present reality! If you can believe, all things are possible. Why? Because God is a God who makes the impossible possible. He can do anything. I want to challenge you to let go of the past hurts, wounds, and scars that are holding you or someone you love back from experiencing the miracles that are still happening today.
I have had many setbacks and seemingly unanswered prayers in my life as well. How do I keep believing God for miracles when other prayers of mine have not been answered? For example, I prayed earnestly for a miracle that my mother would be healed from breast cancer. That prayer did not get answered. For a long time, I struggled to believe that God heard my prayers. I falsely believed many wrong thoughts that came into my head. Then the light bulb went off one day, and I allowed God to heal my heart of the past disappointment and realized that it wasn’t His plan to heal her. He wanted to bring her home to Heaven with Him and it was simply her time. He used the cancer as her way out of this life and into the next.
Shouldn’t this be reason enough to stop believing and praying? Absolutely not! Just because the answer was “not this time” to the healing request for my mom, does not mean that all prayers for a miracle thereafter are “not this time.” Our job is to just believe. If we can do that, we have to trust that He will take care of the rest. My aunt is living proof that miracles still happen!
Can you believe Him for your miracle? Try Him and see what He will do!
